Community-based Sanitation

An initiative on water and sanitation both in the school and community setting is underway in a peri-urban community at Barangay Cupang, Antipolo.  The project builds the capability of local stakeholders to respond to their water and sanitation needs.  Appropriate and sustainable technologies on water and sanitation are also introduced.

  • Homeowners’ Associations in Antipolo (a peri-urban community)
  • Cupang Elementary School (community school)
  • Local Government Unit and the Local School Board
  • Philippine Center for Water and Sanitation (PCWS)
  • BORDA Germany & Indonesia (Bremen Oversees Research and Development Association)

Beneficiaries

  • About 100 families with potential expansion to 300 families in two nearby peri-urban communities
  • 1,500 students of the community school

Project Framework

  • Better living conditions in a poor peri-urban community through the improvement of the local sanitation and water system.

Community-based Sanitation: Key Result Areas

  • The organizational capability and capacity of the community is established in setting-up, operating, maintaining and promoting water and sanitation technologies.

  • An integrated excreta management and recycling facility for the community is operational.

  • A model rainwater collection and groundwater replenishment system for the community and the school is operational.
  • An effective program for water and sanitation education, promotion and action in the community and school is organized.
